COVID-19 Vaccine Coverage and Potential Drivers of Vaccine Uptake among Healthcare Workers in SOMALIA

As Healthcare Workers (HCWs) are one of the most vulnerable groups to contracting and dying due to COVID-19, a team of researchers from SIMAD Faculty of Medicine & Health Science conducted a study to assess the COVID-19 vaccination coverage and its associated factors among healthcare workers in Somalia.

Employing a cross-sectional study design, the data were obtained from thousands of healthcare workers across the various federal states of Somalia. The survey discovered that the COVID-19 vaccine coverage among health professionals was relatively low (37.4%), with the major contributing factors being lack of accessibility, security challenges, and literary prowess.

Finally, the study recommends additional efforts to enhance vaccination uptake are needed to improve the COVID-19 vaccination coverage. The study coincides with recently-concluded discussions by the Ministry of Health- Somalia aimed at boosting COVID19 vaccine uptake in Somalia.
