SU History

SIMAD University formally opened in 1999 as an institute of higher learning. After 11 years of consistent success and achievement, SIMAD was upgraded to a comprehensive academic university on January 20, 2011.

As a leading postsecondary institution in Somalia, SIMAD offers students an ideal environment to pursue their academic studies, priding itself on excellent infrastructure and state of the art technology located on a peaceful and collegial campus.

SIMAD University offers a diverse range of international standard undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various disciplines offered by the university’s faculties, academic departments and institutes: Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Computing, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Education, and Faculty of Law and Institute of Modern Languages.

SIMAD University was established to fulfill a set of core objectives that include the provision of sustainable, quality education and research output of the highest standards and to also contribute to the development of the nation by meeting the needs of all stakeholders as well as preparing learners for their lives after graduation.

The culture and experience of SIMAD University have played an important role in the professional and personal development of its students. SIMAD will continue to contribute to Somali society by facilitating an environment conducive to higher learning and providing facilities for personal and professional growth.

Rector’s Message

Since its foundation in 1999, SIMAD University has played a key role in meeting the growing demand for higher education in Somalia. We believe in the importance of delivering quality education for young Somalis.

All our staff and faculty are motivated knowing that by preparing our youth for the future, they are directly contributing to the development and success of Somalia as a whole.

We are proud of the notable achievements our team has made in such a short time. Responding to the needs of the local population, we have successfully implemented a number of undergraduate academic programs, among them Medicine and Health Sciences, Telecommunications and Engineering, Computers and IT, Business, Banking and Economics, Political Sciences, Law, and Sharia as well as specializations in Math, Statistics and Natural Sciences.

In addition, the patience and commitment of our staff have led to a series of achievements, notably awarding Master’s degrees in collaboration with Open University Malaysia. We have also developed collaborative ties with a number of other universities worldwide. SIMAD also gained membership in the Association of African universities (AAU) and the Arab States Research and Education Network (ASREN).

SIMAD University has recently restructured its facilities, focusing on latest advances in educational technology; notably the addition of 9 computer labs and library upgrade with over 20,000 books and more than 50,000 e-books across a wide range of specializations.

We continually strive to create opportunities and foresee possibilities in our quest to improve and extend the breadth and depth of our vision. At SU, you will find an innovative experiential learning environment with opportunities to learn from and interact with professors and students who share the passion in creating an intellectually stimulating community of scholars.

SU Logo

The university logo symbolizes the traditional way of teaching and writing. Primarily, it shows what is termed as “loox” in Somali - a tablet for writing Qur’anic lessons surrounded by two bird feathers resting on an arch.

At the top of the tablet, the university title is scripted in Somali indicating our commitment to the nation’s development and progress through education rooted in language, tradition and values.

Just below the name of the university, SIMAD, there is an open book and rising sun indicating the dissemination of knowledge in a new era. The color of the wood is green showing that prosperity can be obtained through the delivery of first-rate education.

At the bottom, two feather-pens in a full inkpot are resting on an arch symbolizing the opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the rich educational environment at the university

The Somali flag appears at the summit where the two feather-pens meet; the flag is symbolic identity marking that the university belongs to Somalis in general.

The name of the university is written in three languages: English, Arabic and Somali. The meeting of the two arches shows solidarity among the students, staff and management.

Campuses

Main Campus

A long-served campus! As you can see the name it’s the core campus of the university has. It is located at Warta Nabada District, the industrial road, in Mogadishu, Somalia.

This campus is home to over 15 undergraduate degree programs, plus it is the center of Institute of Modern language. The majority students study at this campus as most faculties are located on this campus.

Our main campus is completely conservational, healthy and green environment that is conducive to learning. Also, the campus is composed of 5 buildings: two new buildings built recently, two contrary buildings, administration building, and ICT and exam office building. In addition, the campus offers main conference hall for which seminars and workshops, public talks, ceremonies, and events are held.

There’s a library in place that has extensive collections that cover a rich array of printed, electronic journals, videos, resources, books and other education materials in various languages.

Apart from these, there is a grand mosque located on the campus. This mosque plays an integral part in enhancing wellness and promotes peace from within across our campuses. It’s that a special place where our students go for spiritual renewal and intellectual nourishment.

Gahair Campus

It is one of the campuses of SIMAD University and it is located in Hamar Jajab district in Mogadishu, Somalia. The campus hosts two faculties: Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Law. It is a calm place contributing to study better. It has also a library for which students can go to learn and do research.

GS Campus

It is the third campus of the university, and it hosts postgraduate students as well as evening program students. It is located in Hodan District, Mogadishu, near to Abdikasim areas.

Memberships

SIMAD is a founding member of Somali Research and Education Network (SomaliREN). SomaliREN is a member of UbuntuNet Alliance, a sub-regional backbone network in Eastern and Southern Africa connecting National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) to each other and to similar networks on other continents via GÉANT, the European research and education backbone network.

The achievements of SIMAD University have been recognized and acknowledged by the Association of African Universities (AAU). SU was offered to full member letter by the AAU. The Association of African Universities is an international non-governmental organization set up by universities in Africa to promote cooperation among themselves and between them and the international Academic community.

SIMAD is a member of Arab States Research and Education Network (ASREN). ASREN is the association of the Arab region National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) and strategic partners, that aim to implement, manage and extend sustainable Pan-Arab e-Infrastructures dedicated for the Research and Education communities and to boost scientific research and cooperation in member countries through the provision of world-class e-Infrastructures and E-services.

SIMAD is a member of International Association of Universities (IAU). IAU is the UNESCO-based worldwide association of higher education institutions. It brings together institutions and organizations from some 120 countries for reflection and action on common concerns and collaborates with various international, regional and national bodies active in higher education.

SU is also a member of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO)

List of International Collaboration

SIMAD UNIVERSITY has signed MoU’s with a number of  international institutions to collaborate on research and academic exchange. These include the following:

Government Management

The Board of Trustees shall consist of nine members, appointed by Direct-Aid, of whom the Rector, African Muslim Agency (AMA) Somali office director and three other Somali academics shall be members provided that the Rector will be an ex-officio member.

The tenure of the Board of Trustees shall be a 5 year renewable period.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for setting the general policy of the university, overseeing the overall operations of the university according to its adopted educational policy and supervising as well as periodically evaluating the performance of the university, and promoting the relationship between the university and other educational institutions. In addition, the board will approve the formation, amalgamation and cancellation of departments and centers.

The Board of Trustees has the power to appoint the Rector of the university, approve the annual budget, and prepare and plan fundraising campaigns.

University Senate

The University Senate is the second highest governing body and is headed by the Rector. The Senate is composed of the Rector, deputies, two deans and two directors. The university Rector, in consultation with his/her deputies shall nominate deans and directors whom will be senate members.

The University Senate shall provide the operational infrastructure of the university. They will undertake general operation and administrative functions in accordance with the terms and conditions specified by the Board of Trustees.

Academic Council

The university has an Academic Council which is accountable to the University Senate. The Academic Council advises and supervises the academic affairs of teaching staff, research affairs, studies, and publications. The Academic Council is composed of the following:

  • Deputy Rector (Academics) as Chairperson.
  • All Deans (Faculty & non-faculty) as members.
  • Deputy Rector (Admin and Finance) as a member.
  • Deputy Rector (Institutional Development) as a member.

Operations Board

The Operations Board has jurisdiction over financial and administrative affairs within the context the university regulations and is comprised of the following members:

  • Deputy Rector (Admin & Finance) as a chairperson.
  • All directors as members.
  • Deputy Rector (Academics) as a member.
  • Deputy Rector (Institutional Development) as a member.

Development Board

The Development Board is mandated for the overall planning and coordination of the university’s intellectual culture including research development, creative activity and the attendant stewardship of resources in support of those endeavors.

The Development Board is composed of the following members:

  • Deputy Rector (Institutional Development) as a chairperson.
  • All directors under the Institutional Development as members.
  • Deputy Rector (Academics) as a member.
  • Deputy Rector (Admin & Finance) as a member.

Accreditation

SIMAD University is accredited by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education of the Republic of Somalia.

The university is registered as a private, non-profit higher education institution with the mandate to create and disseminate knowledge through relevant research work and quality academic standards.

Library

SIMAD UNIVERSITY Library has extensive collections that cover a rich array of printed, digital and media. We also have a wide variety of electronic journals, videos, resources, books and other educational materials in various languages: Arabic, Somali and English. The library currently has over 50,000 different titles and growing.

Internet Access

High-speed Internet access is available across campus. Students can access global electronic journals, databases, and digital resources via a reliable fiber-optic lines and VSAT technology.

Hospitality and Catering Services

SU has a diverse range of catering outlets across our campuses. Our cafes and restaurants, which are conveniently located right on campus offer food choices whether you want to grab something on the move or you fancy to treat yourself for a more proper dining experience, rest assured that you will find something that meets your individual needs. Whether you crave a samosa, or you want to order your favorite spaghetti dish or you just want a cup of tea with cinnamon or cardamom, you will find something that whets your appetite. Student Wellness

SIMAD places student wellbeing at the center of its core services. We care about our students’ overall wellbeing by recognizing them not just as students but also as human beings with unique needs, challenges, goals and emotions. Student wellness is holistic and we therefore consider all aspects of student life: physical, mental and spiritual. They are involved in various sport activities and they can go to the mosques around campus for meditation, prayers and for spiritual reawakening. Our students are couched to ease their mental stress and develop their ability to adapt and effectively deal with academic and life challenges.

Through various activities and services, SU students lead a happy life and have the support that cultivates the confidence they need to realize their full potential. Our students work consistently on their life goals and have a sense of purpose in life. Throughout their academic career at SU, our students develop success skills of being resilient, independent, well-rounded and balanced individuals.

The Campus Mosque

As part to its commitment to create an environment that supports holistic wellbeing, SU mosque plays an integral part in enhancing wellness and promotes peace from within across our campuses. It is that special place where our students go for spiritual renewal and nourishment as well as gathering supernatural wisdom. Strategically located near the student center, the campus mosque has separate prayer halls for both brothers and sisters. It also serves as a great place where you meet new people or catch up with old friends.

Computer Labs

Our computer labs are available across our campuses to support and enrich the learning experience of our students.

The extensive technology infrastructure and the wide range of technology support systems give students the opportunity to gain hands-on practice working with technology. Students, faculty and staff are welcomed to drop in at any time during university’s working hours.
